More than anything else, Winona wanted a pony for her birthday. She wished and wished, and as though wishing would make it so, she told Betsy, Tacy, and Tib, and her other friends at school that a pony was what she was going to get. It was only when the exciting day grew near that Winona began to wonder—What if Father had meant it when he said she couldn't have a pony?

This is a gay story of birthday doings and big and little surprises when the guests she didn't expect (friends that Winona couldn't bear to exclude) began to appear at the party. The children who delivered the laundry, the Syrians from across the valley, even Percy (who hadn't wanted to come) made for plenty of excitement. But the best part of the story comes after the party is over.

Once again, Maud Hart Lovelace has caught the spirit of the happiest moments of childhood. This engaging story-teller has written another book that will be greeted with enthusiasm by younger Betsy-Tacy readers and by all those to whom a birthday party is a memorable event.
