Nat and the other boys in Ward B of the Riverside Orthopedic Hospital find a new interest that almost makes them forget their plaster casts. On the roof next door, outside the ward window, is a loft for racing homer pigeons.

Nat makes friends with Mr. Lombard, the man who owns the pigeons, in a very unusual way. Other exciting things happen, too, such as pigeon races and a pigeon loft on the ward fire escape. Also, each of the boys has a chance to send a message to his family by pigeon post.

Mr. Lombard tells interesting stories about several famous pigeons, and the boys find out many things about them that they had never dreamed of.

Mrs. Molloy knows both pigeons and boys, and makes both seem very much alive in THE PIGEONEERS. The graphic illustrations by Elizabeth Converse were drawn from real life.
