Not many girls are called upon to face as great a change as Phoebe did. She had to leave the mining camp high up in the Andes of Peru where Dad had always been the center of her life, and set our for Maine, U.S.A. She went frightened and alone and found life in the States as strange as Peruvian life would be to most of us. How she faced her grandmother's disapproval, the cold glances of the other girls and boys and won a place for herself in the village makes her story.

The flavor of modern Peru and the fresh atmosphere of the Maine coast are beautifully captured in this warm, contemporary story. But it is probably Phoebe who will please young readers best of all. Anne Molloy has created many memorable heroines from Blanch of the Blueberry Barrens to Patience in Where Away, but never a stronger or more appealing heroine than this girl.
