One day, when Marie was in bed with a cold, Godfather Drosselmayer told her a wonderful story. It was about a Princess who was under the spell of the wicked Mouse Queen. The Princess was saved by Nutcracker, a toymaker's son. But, unfortunately, the spell fell at once on Nutcracker, and he was condemned to stay ugly forever unless he conquered the Mouse King with Seven Heads.

Marie was sure that her Nutcracker, given to her as a Christmas present, was the one in the story. If only he could conquer the Mouse King!

One night Marie had a dream in which Nutcracker conquered the Mouse King—or was it a dream? Many years later a young man comes to the house and then Marie is sure that it all really happened.
