Mary's father gave her a little red house for an Easter present. "It's for jewelry," he told her. "No, it's for mice," Mary said. And indeed there were two make-believe mice there already.

Meanwhile down in the cellar a family of real mice lived in an old cracked flower-pot. There was never enough room for them all at night, and Bonnie often found herself pushed out into the cold. She was very sad and lonely until the wonderful night when she ventured upstairs and found the little red house with a small bed all to herself.

A delightful companion to Rumer Godden's The Mousewife, and to Impunity Jane and The Fairy Doll, which are also illustrated so delightfully by Adrienne Adams.
