Description

This timely book presents in one cohesive account the past, the present, and the future of America's wildlife. The author relates the destruction of the abundant animal life that took place as civilization spread across the continent. He also traces the development of the conservation movement, which began toward the end of the nineteenth century, and describes both private and government efforts in the field.

Throughout this history of the ruin and rescue of American wildlife appear separate biographies of more than seventy different kinds of animals—some that are now extinct, some that were barely saved from the same fate, and many others that are in serious present danger. Individually illustrated by naturalist-artist Bob Hines, each animal is described with its natural history, the record of its exploitation, and its present status, based upon the latest information available from firsthand sources.

The passenger pigeon is probably the most familiar example of a species completely wiped out by senseless slaughter. These graceful birds, once so plentiful they flew overhead in vast flights stretching more than two hundred miles in length, are now entirely extinct. More encouraging are the chronicles of the animals brought back from the brink of destruction, among them the plains bison, the trumpeter swan, and the sea otter. But today there are still a number of species, such as some of the whales, and many birds of prey, waterfowl, reptiles, and amphibians, that are seriously threatened with extinction. The author records the heroic attempts being made to preserve these endangered animals.
