J.R.R. Tolkien's enduring classics, THE HOBBIT and THE LORD OF THE RINGS, have captivated millions of readers from all over the world.

Bilbo is the hero of THE HOBBIT, the adventurer who stole the One Ring, who defied dragons and goblins to become the most famous Hobbit of his time. His LAST SONG was composed just before he took ship to West. It mingles the regret of saying farewell to his friends and to Middle-earth with the insistent call of the sea and his yearning to embark on the ultimate voyage to the Undying Lands beyond the sunset.

Beautifully illustrated by artist Pauline Baynes, the book shows Bilbo's journey to the Grey Havens in the company of Frodo, Sam, Elrond, Galadriel and Gildor, and the start of the final voyage. As a counterpoint to this last adventure there are scenes from Bilbo's first journey, There and Back Again, when he went with thirteen dwarves to the Lonely Mountain to steal their treasure back from Smaug, the dragon. A friend of the author's for many years, Pauline Baynes has included many of Tolkien's own ideas in her portrayal of characters and scenes.

At the end of the book there is a short section of notes for readers who would like more information about the pictures.
