Description

In 1869 Jane's nephew, J.E. Austen Leigh, published "A Memoir of Jane Austen" with the support and approval of the family. In 1871, a second and enlarged edition was published that included, for the first time, Lady Susan as well as "fragments of two other unfinished tales". The contents of the memoir were formed by the documents and letters that had been preserved and passed down as well as the recollections of various family members. This work became the basis and essential primary source for many biographies that came after it.
