Walter Franklin Buehr

1897 - 1971

Nephew of acclaimed German born painter Karl Buehr, Walter Franklin Buehr was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 14, 1897. Having graduated from high school, he went on to study at the Detroit School of Design and the Philadelphia School of Industrial Arts. His art studies, however, were interrupted by the outbreak of World War I.

He served in Company A, 40th Engineers, comprised of skilled artists whose talents were called upon to camouflage field batteries at the front in France. After the war Buehr returned to art school, attending the Art Students League of New York. Later he also studied art in Europe.

Buehr was a man of many talents and interests, most relating to art and design. These included ceramics, the designing of homes and furniture, producing magazine and book illustrations, as well as commercial art.

One of his great passions was sailing. He wanted to share his love of ships and the sea with the land-locked children of middle America, as he himself had once been. His first book for children, Ships and Life Afloat, introduces them to the jargon of the sea, the rigging and handling of ships, and what life aboard is like for a mariner.

Nautical terms and settings abound in American and British Literature, both in our fiction, like the Swallows and Amazons books or the Horatio Hornblower series, as well as in our historical tales, such as those of Captain Kidd or John Paul Jones. Priming the imagination of a child of the prairies and hills with a taste of salt air and a feeling for life at sea helps bring these stories to life.

Buehr's books for children are a superb example of information told as story, one of the hallmarks of non-fiction living books. He presents specific facts as part of a larger web of knowledge, allowing children to develop the skill of making connections as they read. This enables them to better see how the individual pieces of information they are gathering, both within a particular book and across their reading, fit together to form a cohesive whole. His ability to capture the reader's interest, awakening their curiosity and sparking their imagination, separates excellent authors like Buehr from the dry, bullet point style non-fiction that is so commonly available.

Buehr's engaging narrative manner is matched by the skill of his own illustrations, displaying a true artistic eye and hand. These talents are showcased throughout the several dozen children's books he produced before his death in 1971.
